Cosmetic Fillings
What Are Cosmetic Fillings?
Cosmetic fillings, also known as tooth-colored or composite fillings, are dental restorations designed to repair decayed, chipped, fractured, or discolored teeth while maintaining a natural appearance. Unlike traditional amalgam (silver) fillings, cosmetic fillings use composite resin materials that blend with the color of your teeth, making them ideal for visible areas such as front teeth.
Benefits of Cosmetic Fillings
- Aesthetic Appeal:
They closely match the natural shade of teeth, making them virtually unnoticeable. - Minimally Invasive:
Less tooth structure needs to be removed compared to amalgam fillings. - Versatility:
Useful for treating cavities, repairing chips/cracks, and even reshaping disfigured teeth. - Bonding Strength:
Composite resin bonds directly to the tooth structure, providing extra support. - Mercury-Free:
Unlike silver fillings, cosmetic fillings do not contain mercury, making them a preferred option for many health-conscious patients.
How the Procedure Is Done
- Examination & Shade Matching: The dentist selects a resin shade that matches your tooth color.
- Tooth Preparation: Decay or damaged areas are removed. The tooth is cleaned and dried.
- Layering Composite Resin: The dentist applies the resin in layers, using a special curing light to harden each one.
- Shaping & Polishing: After the final layer, the filling is shaped to match your tooth’s contour and polished for a smooth finish.
- Duration: Typically takes 30–60 minutes per tooth.
Caring for Cosmetic Fillings
To maintain the longevity and appearance of your cosmetic fillings:
- Practice Good Oral Hygiene:
Brush twice daily, floss once, and use fluoride toothpaste. - Avoid Hard Foods:
Chewing ice, pens, or hard candy can crack fillings. - Limit Stain-Causing Foods:
Coffee, red wine, and tobacco can stain composite resin over time. - Regular Dental Checkups:
Visit your dentist every 6 months for cleanings and to check the integrity of the filling. - Wear a Mouthguard if Needed:
Especially if you grind your teeth at night (bruxism).
